If you’re a trades business, whether a builder, plumber, electrician, or similar, then getting regular, local enquiries is vital. But competition is growing, and word-of-mouth alone doesn’t cut it anymore.
That’s where Local SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) can give you a serious edge. It helps you show up in key Google searches like:
• Emergency plumber in [Your Town]
• Electrician near me
• Garage door repairs Southport
These searches come from real people who are ready to hire someone like you - if they can find you.

What Is SEO for Tradesmen?
SEO is simply the process of making your website and online presence more visible in search engines.
When someone searches for a local service, your goal is to appear on the first page — ideally in both Google Maps and organic listings.
For example, if you're a plumber in Manchester, you want to show up when someone types: “Plumbing company Manchester” or “Emergency plumber near me.”
These are high-intent searches that often lead directly to enquiries.
By improving your visibility, you’ll generate more leads and win more jobs without relying on paid ads.
Why Local SEO Works for Trades
Most people use Google to find tradespeople in their area.
If you’re not showing up, your competitors are.
SEO provides long-term results and it’s one of the most cost-effective ways to generate leads online.
Here are some key stats that show the importance of optimising your website and Google Business Profile:
• 90%+ of potential customers search online before hiring a tradesperson.
• If you’re not on page 1, your competitors are getting those jobs.
• Local SEO is one of the cheapest long-term ways to generate new leads.
Proven SEO Strategies for Tradesmen
Let’s break down what actually works based on real results from trades clients we’ve helped across the UK.
Step 1: Optimise Google Business Profile

Your Google Business Profile is what shows up in Maps and local search.
If you don't have a profile currently set up and properly optimised, you're leaving money on the table and letting it flow to your nearby competitors.
To get more calls and enquiries from your Google Business Profile, we'll split this section into two:
Google Profile Optimisation
• Add your full business name, phone, and address
• Choose the right service categories (e.g. “Emergency Plumber”)
• Upload real photos of your work
• Add FAQs to the profile for relevance
• Add Google post updates with call to action
• Add a keyword-rich business description
• Add up to 20 locations you want to serve (15-mile radius)
• Increase Google reviews (aim for at least 10 to start with)
Google Profile Management
• Create and submit 4-6 monthly Google posts
• Reply to all latest reviews promptly
• Further increase quantity of Google reviews
• Add latest photos and images of real work
• Analyse monthly call and website stats
Step 2: Build a Website That Converts
In order to get found in Google organic searches, as well as other major search engines, you want to have a professional, secure, and high-converting website.
This means having a professional layout that covers key content about your company and key services.
You also want to have a clear call to action as a global element on your website such as the ''Call Now'' button or ''Email Us Today'' button where customers can easily contact you.
This is going to make it much easier to convert a visitor to a customer.
Check out a few examples of highly-converting websites we created below for our clients:
-JST Construction
-Moss Bank Flooring
-Shaw's Commercial Laundry Solutions
Step 3: Create SEO-Friendly Service Pages
Once you have your website properly set up you want to start creating service-specific pages.
This is important for two reasons; it shows new customers that land on your website you provide exactly what they need and it gives you the opportunity to rank for multiple services in key locations.
To work out what specific service pages to create, mind-map every service you provide and then create a service page for that individual service covering what you provide, benefits, your process, FAQs, and calls to action. You then want to optimise each page for your main town or city (preferably where your business address is registered).
Here's an example of service pages you may create as a plumber:
• Plumbing Services Manchester
• Bathroom Installation Manchester
• Power Flushing Manchester
• Underfloor Heating Manchester
• Radiator Installation Manchester
Step 4: Create SEO-Friendly Location Pages
Another key strategy to grow your local visibility, online presence and enquiries is to create SEO-friendly location pages.
These are classed as ''money pages'' which are going to target exact match keywords for your services in nearby areas.
Typically, to work out which local areas to target, draw a map around your registered business address and target locations with populations of 20,000 and above.
Each page should be unique and tailored, not copied and pasted with just the location name swapped. Google rewards pages with real value.
For example, you could target 10x areas in the North West you want to serve.
Step 5: Get Listed in Local Directories
Getting listed on platforms like Checkatrade, TrustATrader, and Yell helps build trust with both Google and potential customers.
These sites can also drive direct traffic and leads.
You can also boost visibility by joining local business directories or sponsoring a local sports team which often earns you a backlink from their website, strengthening your SEO.
Places to get listed:
• Checkatrade
• TrustATrader
• Local business directories
• Sponsorships (e.g. local football club)
Top tip: Start by searching ‘business directories in (your town)’ on Google and submit your name, address, phone number, and website.
Client Example: UK Doors & Shutters (Bolton)
One of our clients, a roller shutter repair company, was only getting 8 calls a month when they first came to us for Local SEO Services.
After working with us to optimise their Google Business Profile, build location pages, and increase reviews, they now receive over 30–40 calls per month - a 337% jump on average!
That’s the power of consistent local SEO done right.
The graphic below shows Google Business Profile calls (January - June 2025) where we helped the company get 142 calls for just one Google Business Profile.
